The file “bksb_mini.mdf” is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup. The file must be decompressed.

This error is caused when your hard drive has set the bksb database files to be compressed, to resolve this issue please follow the steps below:

 

  1. Click Start
  2. Click “Run” (or hold [windows key] + R)
  3. Type “services.msc” (no quotes)
  4. Locate “SQL Server (BKSBPORTAL)” (This may vary dependant on the way you installed bksb)
  5. Right Click
  6. Click “Stop”
  7. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\
  8. Right click “bksb_mini.mdf”
  9. Click “Properties”
  10. Click “Advanced…”
  11. Uncheck “Compress contents to save disk space”
  12. Click OK
  13. Repeat for bksb_mini_log.ldf
  14. Go back to “Services”
  15. Right click “SQL Server (BKSBPORTAL)”
  16. Click “Start”

Now bksb should be able to connect to your database fine.

MSXML6 and SQL Server database services not installing

 

Summary

MSXML6, SQL Server Database Services & Workstation Components, books online … failed to install.

Cause

MSXML6 Service pack 2 has been installed which has a version higher than the version being installed. This is actually incorrect as the version of MSXML6 that is installed by SQL 2005 is newer than the MSXML6 Service Pack 2 installation.

Solution

Remove MSXML6 Installation using Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

Instructions

   1.   Download Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

   2.   Install Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

   3.   Run Windows Install Clean Up (Start > All Programs >

         Windows Install Clean Up).

   4.   Select all instances of MSXML.


404 Page not found

Summary

404 – Page cannot be found.

Cause

This error is generally generated because of one of the following reasons:

  • IIS has prohibited ASP.NET v2.0.50727.
  • DNS is not resolving due to proxy server being used.
  • IIS is not running on port 80.

 

Solution

IIS has prohibited ASP.NET v2.0.50727

  1. Open Internet Information Services.
  2. Click ‘Web Service Extensions’.
  3. Select ‘ASP.NET v2.0.50727’.
  4. Click Allow.
  5. Refresh the page.

DNS is not resolving due to proxy server being used.

You need to add an exception to IE:

  1. Open ‘Internet explorer’.
  2. Click ‘Tools’.
  3. Click ‘Internet Options’.
  4. Click ‘Connections’ tab.
  5. Click ‘LAN Settings’.
  6. Click Advanced under ‘proxy server’ group panel.
  7. Add the server name as an exception in Exceptions box.

IIS is not running on port 80

Sometimes software, like ESM Server for exams, uses port 80 which means that IIS is unable to bind to this port.

In the case above, you need to either:

  • stop the other service and change the port it runs on or
  • change the port in IIS.

 

The following will guide you through changing the port in IIS:

  1. Open ‘Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager’.
  2. Expand ‘Web sites’.
  3. Right click on your virtual website (Usually ‘Default Web Site’).
  4. Click Properties.
  5. Change ‘TCP port:’ under ‘Web site identification’ group panel. (Change this to something that is not used e.g. 8080.)
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Right click the virtual website.
  9. Click Start (if not already started).

Now test the website with an address similar to the example.http://servername:8080/bksb_Portal/

An alternative to this method is to:

  1. uninstall bksb
  2. create a new virtual website and
  3. bind to the port of your choice.

 

Server Error in ‘/bksb_Portal’ Application

Summary

Server Error in ‘/bksb_Portal’ Application. (Runtime Error).

Cause

This can be caused by a variety of reasons. 

This is a generic message stating that there was an error with the bksb software, but the server is unable to show the error to remote machines.

 

Solution

Run the application locally and you will receive a full report of the error.

 If this is the first time you have run the bksb software, then the most likely cause is:

  • the SQL server has not been configured for remote connections or
  • the SQL username and password do not match.

Simply search for the error you receive when getting the full error locally on the server and the solution should be at hand.

Assessment is blank/has no content

Summary

Assessment is blank or has no content e.g. no questions or images, apart from the ‘next’ and ‘back’ boxes appearing.

Cause

This is caused when Adobe Flash Player is below version 8.

 

Solution

Install flash player, supplied with bksb, or from www.adobe.com.

Flash installer is included with bksb and can be generally found in “C:\Program Files\bksb\bksb Standalone v3 IA & Diag\” called “install_flash_player_active_x.exe”

Once Flash Player 8 or above has been installed, the assessment will show all content.

 

 

Manually installing SQL Express 2005

Summary

I would like to, or need to, manually install SQL Express 2005.

 

Cause

You may need to do this when the automated version of SQL will not install (generally due to service accounts on Domain Controllers) or you may just wish to install with your own settings.

 

Solution

1.   Launch SQL setup.

Download latest installer 

bksb 2008 installer locations

bksb 2010 installer locations

2.   Agree to licensing.

3.   Click ‘Next’.

 

4.   Wait for ‘Microsoft SQL server 2005 Setup Support Files’ to be installed.

5.   Click ‘Next’.

6.   Click ‘Next’ on the Welcome screen.

 

7.   Wait for ‘System Configuration Check’ to complete successfully.

8.   Click ‘Next’.

9.   Enter ‘Name’ and ‘Company’ as appropriate.

 

10.   Take the check out of ‘Hide advanced configuration options’.

11.   Click ‘Next’.

12.   Use the default features selected.

 

13.   Click ‘Next’.

14.   Enter the name of the instance you want SQL installed as e.g. bksbPortal.

15.   Click ‘Next’.

 

16.   Use default options for ‘Service Account’ window.

17.   Click ‘Next’.

18.   Select ‘Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication)’.

 

19.   Enter ‘sa’ password of your choice.

20.   Leave Collation as default.

21.   Click ‘Next’.

 

22.   Click ‘Next’ (User Instances).

23.   Click ‘Next’ (Error and Usage Report Settings).

24.   Click ‘Install’ (Ready to Install).

 

25.   Wait for setup to complete.

26.   Click Finish.

27.   Launch bksb Database Configuration.

  • Double click ‘SQLConfiguration.exe’.
    • Select the installed instance name and create bksb database using buttons and guidance provided.

The installer was interrupted before bksb web portal v3 could be installed. You need to restart the installer and try again.

Summary

When installing a bksb product you receive the error stating that the installer was interrupted.

 

Cause

Windows Server 2000, 2003 & 2008

  • ASP.NET 2.0 has not been fully registered with IIS
  • Internet Enhanced security is blocking the installation

Windows Sevrer 2008 & Vista

  • IIS 6 Metabase compatability is not installed
Solution

IIS 6 Metabase compatibility is not installed

To install the IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility Components by using the Windows Server 2008 Server Manager

  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools and then Server Manager.
  2. In the left navigation pane, expand Roles, and then right-click Web Server (IIS) and select Add Role Services.
  3. On the Select Role Services pane, scroll down to IIS 6 Management Compatibility.
  4. Select the check boxes for IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility and IIS 6 Management Console.
  5. Click Next from the Select Role Services pane, and then click Install at the Confirm Installations Selections pane.
  6. Click Close to leave the Add Role Services wizard.


To install the IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility Components by using the Windows Vista Control Panel

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs and Features, and then click Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open Internet Information Services.
  3. Open Web Management Tools.
  4. Open IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility.
  5. Select the check boxes for IIS 6 Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility and IIS 6 Management Console.
  6. Click OK.

ASP.NET 2.0 has not been fully registered with IIS:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type cmd
  4. Click OK
  5. Type C:
  6. Type CD C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
  7. Type aspnet_regiis –i

 

Once ASP.NET has finished installing to IIS, you may run the bksb installation again.

 

Internet Enhanced security is blocking the installation

  1. Open ‘Control Panel’
  2. Open ‘Add or Remove Programs’
  3. Click ‘Add/Remove Windows Components’
  4. Deselect ‘Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration’
  5. Click Next
  6. Click Finish
  7. Launch bksb installer again

 


ClientSettings.config is hard to configure

Summary

Some people may find that the Client settings file is hard to configure (especially without syntax highlighting).

We have now developed a small graphical interface to choose the settings you need to configure the settings in this file.

PDF files are not found with Functional Skills Resource CD

Summary

You may find when you receive your Functional Skills Resource CD that the PDF files do not link into the interface.

 

Cause

On some CDs there is a folder that has not been created called either ‘Entry PDF Files’ or ‘PDF Files L1-3’ within the first directory on the CD.

Entry 1-3 CD

Level 1-3 CD

 

However, this should be in the format of:

 

Entry 1-3 CD

Level 1-3 CD

 

Solution

To fix this issue you can either:

 

  • Use the ClientSettings configuration utility to set the location of the resources. When selecting the resource locations, this utility will automatically move and create the necessary folders.

 Download ClientSettings  Configuration Utility

  •  Create folders manually:

1.      Open ‘# E1-3 2008’ folder.

2.      Create a new folder called ‘Entry PDF Files’ without the quotes.

3.      Cut and paste the folders ‘English’ and ‘Mathematics’ into the ‘Entry PDF Files’ folder.

 

4.      Open ‘# Level 1-3 2008’ folder.

5.      Create a new folder called ‘PDF Files L1-3’ without the quotes.

6.      Cut and paste the folders ‘English’ and ‘Mathematics’ into the ‘PDF Files L1-3’ folder.

Diagnostic result timeout or slow loading

Summary

The diagnostic results may slow down after you have had a substantial amount of learners taking diagnostic assessments. (This may seem to be an intermittent issue.)

The update below incorporates the following fixes:

  • IE 8 small assessment window
  • IA Summary slow loading (bksb Reporting)

Cause

The diagnostic page slows down as more and more learners take diagnostic assessments. This is due to a view which is populated with queries from many different tables. This view is queried for each resource that the learner needs to work on; therefore some results will load faster than others.

 

Solution

We have modified the diagnostic page to pull in all data needed at the start of page load and then store and use data from memory. In some cases this brings page load times down from 20-30 seconds to 1-2 seconds.

UK Rolling update for bksb portal and reporting

At bksb we are always looking at ways to improve our software. We greatly welcome feedback from customers and endeavour to add requested features and fix any issues.

This FAQ article links to a rolling update of bksb which can be applied to bring bksb up to the latest version.

WARNING: Applying an update to the wrong product may require a re-installation.

There are 2 updates below, 1 for bksb_Portal and another for bksb_Reporting (aka Group Profile)

Default locations:
bksb Portal: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\bksb_Portal\
bksb Reporting: 
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\bksb_Reporting\

  1. Download & Save 
  2. Run/open the file
  3. If C:\inetpub\wwwroot\bksb_Portal\ is in the portal location, click update. Otherwise, click browse to select the location of the bksb_Portal folder.
  4. Once you have selected the location of your working bksb_Portal
  5. Click “Backup Database”
    1. Select location to backup database. (This folder must have permission for sql to write to it.  Add the group ‘everyone’ with modify access if needed.)
    2. Click OK.
    3. Wait for backup to complete.
    4. If backup failed, check permissions.
    5. If backup is successful, then carry on to update bksb.
  6. Click the Update button
  7. Once successfully completed, the updater will show the following screen:

  8. If the update was unsuccessful, you will receive a message saying that the update failed and an option to view which files were not copied and/or which SQL files could not be executed.

Now follow the same steps as above to update bksb Reporting (making sure to select the bksb_reporting folder).

If you receive error while updating, use the error list to view the error as this could simply be that a file is in use. If you can’t resolve the issue, contact bksb technical support on 01623 627 191 ext 8234

Date of Birth (DOB) error when updating via Edit Details

Summary

When a learner is updating their DOB on the Edit Details page, they receive an error after clicking update.

 

Cause

This is caused by the regional language settings on the server being set to a date format other than DD/MM/YYYY (usually US MM/DD/YYYY).

 

Solution

To resolve this issue we can force the regional settings of the server software to accept & process dates in UK format.

  1. Open web.config in notepad from within C:\inetpub\wwwroot\bksb_Portal\
  2. Search for <system.web>
  3. Create a new line below
  4. Paste the following:  <globalization culture=”en-GB”/>
  5. Now save web.config

bksb will now accept the format of DD/MM/YYYY.

Result spans multiple pages when printing

Summary

When printing a learners result or action plan, the printout may span multiple pages in large text.

 

Cause

Internet Explorer 6 or below is being used and doesn’t have the option for “Shrink To Fit”.

 

Solution

Upgrade Internet Explorer to a minimum of Internet Explorer 7.

If you already have Internet Explorer 7, then click File > Print Preview… > Change the percentage to “Shrink To Fit”
